Hanging Stone — Legend

1. Why is it called Hanging Rock?  

a : Like the philosophy of a loyal dog, wherever the master goes, he will always be followed, even in the face of death. The girl and her dog hung until they became a rock which is now called Batu Gantung. 


2. Why are there hanging rocks in Lake Toba?  

a : Batu Gantung was formed as a result of the powerful eruption of Mount Toba thousands of years ago. The eruption formed Lake Toba. Meanwhile, Hanging Rock is formed from lava with high viscosity. 


3. Where did the story of Batu Gantung come from?  

a : According to the Indonesian Ministry of Education and Culture's Intangible Cultural Heritage site, Batu Gantung is a folklore that developed among the people around Lake Toba

— From Seruni and then naming it as Batu Gantung and because the last words Seruni heard by residents were "Parapat Parapat and Parapat" the area around Batu Gantung was then given the name Parapat.

— Parapat has become one of the tourist destination cities in North Sumatra Province. 


12. What can we learn from this story? 

— So someone should not easily despair and immediately want to end their life.

— So, don't give up easily and immediately want to end your life. 


(2) Legend ( crying stone )


 The Story of "Crying Stone" from Borneo Island

Once upon a time, in a small village in Borneo Island, there lived a mother and her daughter. The daughter was popular among villagers because of her beautiful face but she has bad behavior. She always spent her time in front of the mirror admiring her beautiful face. She never helped her mother to fulfill their daily needs. The daughter always made her mother sad. However, the mother still loved her very much.

One day, the girl asked her mother to buy her a new gown. The mother refused it because she had no money. Because the mother loved her daughter so much, she finally bought her a new gown.

Both went to the market. But the daughter asked her mother to walk behind because she was embarrassed if people saw them together. Once again, because of her love, the mother obeyed the daughter's request.

Along the way home, the daughter still walked in front of her mother. People passing asked about the woman behind her. The daughter answered that she was not her mother but her servant. The mother kept silent. But inside her deep heart, she prayed to God to punish her daughter.

Suddenly, her daughter's legs turned into stone. The daughter realized that it was because she had hurt her mother's feelings. She begged her mother to forgive but it was too late.

Slowly, her body also turned into stone. Though the daughter had become a stone, the tears were still seen, which was why the stone was called Batu Menangis.

(1) Fable


Once upon a time, there was a couple living in a royal residence.

They were Prince Raden Putra and also Dewi Limaran.

Royal Prince Raden Putra father's was the king of the kingdom.

One day, Dewi Limaran was walking in the royal residence yard.

All of a sudden she saw a snail, it was awful as well as disgusting.

"Yuck!” Stated Dewi Limaran and afterwards she threw it away right into a river.

She didn't know that the snail was actually an old and also powerful witch.

She might transform herself right into anything.

The witch was mad to Dewi Limaran.

The witch put a spell on her and also change her to a golden snail.

The witch after that tossed it away into the river.

The golden snail was drifting away in the river as well as got caught into a net.

An old lady was angling as well as utilized her net to catch some fish.

She was surprised to see a gold snail in her net.

She took it and brought it to the residence.

When the old woman got up in the morning, she was stunned that the house is in the excellent condition.

The floor was wiped and also she had food on the table.

She was thinking very hard, “who did this to me? The person is really kind”.

The old lady is very interested.

One night, she choose to stay up late.

She was peeping from her room to know who prepared for her.


Then, she could not believe what she saw.


The gold snail she caught in the river became a lovely female.


The old female approached her.


“Who are you, girl?”


“I'm Dewi Limaran, Ma'am. I was cursed by a witch. I can alter back as a human just in the evening. And spell can be broken if I listen to the tune from the divine gamelan.” Explained Dewi Limaran.


After that, the old woman rushed to the palace.


She spoke with Royal Prince Raden Putra concerning his other half.


Royal Prince Raden Putra was so happy.


He had actually been seeking his better half all over.


Then he prayed and meditated, he asked the god to offer him the divine gamelan.


He wanted to break the witch's spell.


After numerous days hoping as well as meditating.


Lastly god provided his dream.


He immediately brought the divine gamelan to the old woman's house.


He played it beautifully.


And then remarkably the gold snail turned back into the beautiful Dewi Limaran.


The couple was so happy that they could be together again.


They also said thanks to the old lady for her kindness.

one summer day a lazy grasshopper chirped singing and enjoying the sun the grasshopper saw an ant working very hard to gather food the grasshopper called out to the ant 

stop your silly work and have fun with me don't answer my ant is gathering food for the winter I suggest you do the same but the grasshopper just ignores the ants the grasshopper spends the rest of the sunny days having fun when winter finally begins the grasshopper can't find anything

to eat he looks for food everywhere  but everything is buried under the snow he remembers the hard worker ant he goes to his house and cries I'm hungry I can't find anything to eat the ant feels sorry for him 

the ant calls the grasshopper inside and gives him food which 

the grasshopper happily ate and promised the ant that he would never sit still in the days before winter.


(1) Fairy Tale — Cinderella


Once upon a time, in a village there lived a beautiful girl named Cinderella with her wicked stepmother and two step sisters. She worked hard all day. One day, they all went to a ball in the palace, leaving Cinderella behind. Cinderella was feeling sad. Suddenly there was a burst of light and the fairy godmother appeared.With a flick of the magic she turned Cinderella into a beautiful princess with glass slippers and a horse carriage appeared at the door. The fairy godmother warned Cinderella to return before midnight. Cinderella arrived at the ball, the prince saw her and fell in love with her. 


They danced together all night. as the clock struck twelve, Cinderella rushed out to her carriage leaving one of her slippers behind. 


The prince went to every house in the town with the slipper until he found Cinderella. The prince and Cinderella lived happily ever after.

(2) Fable — Timun Emas



A widow lived with her baby, Timun Mas. One day while working in the garden, Timun Mas was watched by a giant named Buto Ijo who wanted to eat her. Buto Ijo chased Timun Mas until she threw cucumber seeds that instantly grew into a cucumber vine to help her get escape. 

Timun Mas outwitted Buto Ijo thrice with other seeds that instantly grew into obstacles that helped her escape. Finally, Buto Ijo chased her to the ocean. The giant drowned after the fish eaten him, while the fisherman saved Timun Mas. 

Moral of the story: Cleverness and wisdom can defeat evil intention.
